Job Title: Facility Cook

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare meals for individuals and families accessing our services, taking into consideration their dietary needs, preferences, and any special dietary restrictions.
  • Develop weekly or monthly menus that offer a variety of nutritious and balanced meals, including options for individuals with specific dietary requirements or cultural preferences.
  • Coordinate and organize the purchasing and stocking of food supplies and ingredients, ensuring an adequate inventory for meal preparation.
  • Prepare meals according to standardized recipes, maintaining consistency in taste, presentation, and portion sizes.
  • Cook and bake a wide range of dishes, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, as well as snacks and desserts.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and food storage areas, following food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain proper food storage and labeling practices to prevent spoilage and cross-contamination.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to address specific dietary needs or food-related concerns of individuals in our program.
  • Adapt recipes and meal plans to accommodate special dietary needs, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergen-free options.
  • Maintain knowledge of nutritional guidelines and standards, staying up to date with best practices in nutrition and dietary recommendations.
  • Monitor food costs and assist with budget management related to the kitchen and meal preparation.
  • Train and supervise kitchen assistants or volunteers, providing guidance on food preparation techniques and kitchen safety procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance culinary skills and knowledge.
  • Foster a positive and welcoming environment in the kitchen, promoting teamwork and cooperation among kitchen staff.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including proper handling and storage of food, proper use of kitchen equipment, and regular cleaning and maintenance of kitchen appliances.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a cook or chef, preferably in a facility or institutional setting.
  • Strong culinary skills and knowledge of various cooking techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and dietary requirements, including special dietary needs and restrictions.
  • Familiarity with menu planning and meal preparation for a diverse population.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining quality standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in meal preparation and food presentation.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations, including HACCP guidelines.
  • Ability to adapt recipes and menus to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions, recipes, and portion control guidelines accurately.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Flexibility in working hours, as some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
  • Valid food handler's certificate or food safety training certification.
  • Respect for diversity and cultural sensitivity when preparing meals.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Culinary training or certification is a plus.
